About Anthony

My name is Anthony Fidler. I'm 36, and have been a serious practitioner of Tai Chi since 1997.

Most of my training has been carried out in China, first with Wang Zhi Ping and then later with Chen Gao Chang (Chang Chang).  Chang Chang is a teacher of the Wang Xi An  lineage.

I have also studied a little with Chen Xiao Wang, also an inspiring teacher, but my contact time with him is insignificant in comparison to my journey with Wang Zhi Ping and Chang Chang.

I practise Simplified Yang Style 24,  42 Style , Chen Style Laojia 75 and Chen  32.

I realised after my first real experience of Tai Chi that I wanted it whatever the effort required and I practised every day from then on generally twice a day.

I actually focused all of my life on my Tai Chi alongside Vipassana Meditation for several years with everything else literally bending round the edges of it or being surrendered.

My journey is still an ongoing process, but Tai Chi is a very rewarding part of my life and one I wouldn't want to have missed for anything.

My first contact with Tai Chi was while a student at Cambridge University in 1989.

I attended weekly classes for a couple of academic years, but  failed to integrate it into my life and eventually gave up.

I didn't give it attention again until 5 years later in 1997 when I met Wang Zhi Ping in the park in Yangshuo, China.

At this point Tai Chi entered my life and I returned to China year after year afterwards to continue my study.
I visited in 1998, 1999 and 2000 when I decided to give up visiting and just lived in China until July 2001.

Much of the rest of the time between 1997 and 2001 was also spent in Asia when I would set up lifestyles for myself which facilitated my practice usually in India.

Since 2001, I've visited in 2003, 2005 and 2006 for 2-3 months training each time and then in 2007 I spent 7 months of intensive training with my teachers.

I cannot compare the experience of learning once a week in a class that I had at Cambridge with my experience of learning in China - for me, generally 7 days a week and 3-4 hours or more per day one to one with my teachers.

However in the classes I teach myself, I aspire to convey the experience I gained and hand it over in a way which allows Western people to learn as quickly and well as they are able within the constraints of their lifestyle.

Tai Chi did not come easily for me. In fact I would say I was so uncoordinated and broken in my energy flow that I was literally ill and the learning path has been very hard for me.

This journey has left me with a lot of experience and patience for teaching the Tai Chi and I am excited now about sharing my Tai Chi with others.

My other work while living in Asia has been teaching English which I've found very rewarding and also a source of growth for myself.
It has helped me a lot in learning about teaching groups of people.

In the UK, I worked for a while as a financial auditor and then as a Computer Programmer and though I always did my best to do a good job, I can't really say my heart was in that work.

At heart I am a traveller. I feel at home in India, the Himalayas, Nepal, Tibet and China and everything I do seems to be inspired by the connections I've made on my journeys.

I am only now starting to find myself in my work which I see as being a manifestation in the West of my ongoing life in the East.  My name in Chinese is EasternPeace.
